What is GATE EXAM?

The GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering) is a national-level exam in India. It serves two main purposes:

Higher Education: It's the primary entrance test for admission to M.Tech, M.E., and direct Ph.D. programs at top institutes like the IITs, NITs, and IIITs.
Government Jobs: Many major Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs)—such as ONGC, NTPC, BHEL, DRDO, and ISRO—use GATE scores to recruit engineers.

The exam is held nationwide across eight regional zones. It's jointly conducted by a committee of professors from IISc Bangalore and seven IITs, and this committee operates under the National Coordination Board (NCB), which falls under India's Ministry of Education. The next edition is GATE 2027.

GATE 2027 Exam Eligibility Criteria

Candidates with a 10+2+2 or 10+3+1 academic background are eligible for GATE, provided they are currently in their 3rd year (or higher) of any undergraduate program, or have already graduated from a government-recognized institution in Engineering, Technology, Architecture, Science, Commerce, or Arts.

Marking Scheme	Questions carry 1 mark or 2 marks
Negative Marking	For a wrong answer chosen in an MCQ, there will be negative marking. For a 1-mark MCQ, 1/3 mark will be deducted for a wrong answer. For a 2-mark MCQ, 2/3 mark will be deducted for a wrong answer. There is no negative marking for wrong answer(s) to MSQ or NAT questions. There is no partial marking in MSQ.
